Summer English Program

We are proud to have a diverse class made of students from all over the world! It is important that these international students are proficient English speakers so they are able to contribute to classroom and group discussions. The Intensive English Institute (IEI) on campus will coordinate and facilitate a four-week summer English program for incoming MBA students. This course will give students plenty of opportunities to practice and improve their English speaking and writing skills, interact with native English speakers, and become accustomed to the Illinois campus. This course will be required or recommended for international students based on their TOEFL score and/or English skills during the Admissions interview.

In addition, students who are required to take IEI will also be required to take the English Placement Test (EPT) in August 2012. Based on a student's EPT scores, he/she may be required to enroll in an English as a Second Language (ESL) course in conjunction with his/her MBA courses during Fall 2012.

International students will receive detailed information about IEI in their admission letter.

Summer Math Course

If you haven't taken a math course in a while and you are terrified of taking accounting, statistics, and economics during your first quarter in the Illinois MBA, you are not alone. We realize that many of you have not been exposed to this material for quite some time, and some of you have never taken these courses. Don't worry — we have resources available that will help you prepare for the core curriculum.

The MBA curriculum is challenging, and we want you to be successful. That is why we will require some students to take an online math course during the summer. Students who score below 600 on the GMAT or 700 or below on the GRE quantitative portion will be required to participate in an online, self-paced preparatory program called MBA Math. The program covers basic concepts in finance, economics, statistics and accounting, as well as basic features of Excel. It will serve as a good refresher, provide you a preview of content from the curriculum, and is a great opportunity to get a jump on the core material so that it will look familiar when classes begin.

Even if you are not required to take MBA Math, we strongly encourage everyone to participate in this online preparatory course so you are even more prepared to begin the Illinois MBA. You will receive more details about MBA Math from Student Affairs this summer.
