Illinois MBA Teams up with Eastern Illinois Foodbank
The Illinois MBA is teaming up with the Eastern Illinois Foodbank to help alleviate hunger throughout the month of April. This month-long service project is part of an initiative sponsored by the Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC) called TeamMBA, which was created to celebrate, promote, and publicize the outstanding community and volunteer work that is performed by graduate management programs. Each week there are several events, meals, and speakers that will draw attention and help raise money for EIF in partnership with TeamMBA. Joint Degree InfoSession Scheduled for April 13
University of Illinois students are invited to find out more about earning an MBA as a joint degree by attending a reception and information session on Tuesday, April 13, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. The event will be held in the Business Instructional Facility at 515 E. Gregory Dr. in Champaign. The Illinois MBA offers a joint degree with any Master's or PhD program on campus. Joint degree students can earn an MBA in three semesters, as opposed to four semesters for non-joint degree students. To register for this event, click here.
2010 Career Lab for Women Business Leaders
The Illinois MBA is co-hosting the Forté Foundation's 2010 Career Lab at the University of Illinois for women interested in learning more about business. The lab is on April 8. MBA Students Bring "Idea-Sharing" Conference to Illinois
TEDxUIUC, a TED-licensed event, is scheduled to take place on April 10, 2010, at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Organized by a group of Illinois MBA students (Cristian Mitreanu, Nick Timpone, Srinivas Venugopal, and Derek Larsen), the event will feature over 20 short-but-powerful presentations under the overarching theme "Bold — Ideas, Innovations, Performances." Up to 300 participants are expected to attend and hear from speakers including Paul Debevec (recent Academy Award winner for technical and scientific achievement in "Avatar") and David Markham (President, Lockheed Martin). Illinois MBA Alumni Start Online Social Network for Veterans
Chris Petersen and Dave Chonowski, former U.S. Army officers who are 2008 graduates of the Illinois MBA, recently launched an online social network for military veterans who have earned MBA degrees. The website - MBA Veterans Connect - provides a platform for veterans who are now in the business profession to network and provide support for each other. Petersen and Chonowski have also organized military MBA career fairs that have successfully grown each of the past two years.
MBA Students Initiate Project to Help Local Non-Profits
Professional MBA students Rebecca Motley and Kate Meghji have transformed a class project into community service. Together, they have initiated a program called "Illinois MBA Non-Profit Outreach" that will enable local non-profit companies to gain the consulting services of current MBA students at no cost. Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus to Present on U of I Campus
Muhammad Yunus, who received the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize for his pioneering concept of banking without collateral for the poorest of the poor, will be honored with the university's Presidential Award and Medallion on Monday, March 1. After the ceremony, which will begin at 7 p.m. in Foellinger Auditorium, Yunus will deliver a public talk, "Social Entrepreneurship in the 21st Century." In connection with Yunus' talk, students, researchers, and organizations with social entrepreneurship projects have been invited to present their work.
MBA Students Enjoy Free Lunch with Professors
MBA students will have the opportunity to sit down for a free lunch with their professors starting this week. Students initiated this program, which is supported by the Illinois MBA, so that students may build camaraderie with their professors outside of the classroom. This program started last year and received a great response and therefore has been re-launched.

The Illinois MBA is hosting two informational events on Thursday, February 11. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the Illinois MBA. There will be an information session and lunch at the Illini Center in Chicago at noon. Student Wins First Prize in Sustainable Business Essay Contest
Srinivas Venugopal, a first-year MBA student, has won first prize in the BoP (Base of the Pyramid) Narrative Competition, hosted by the Center for Sustainable Global Enterprise at Cornell University, for his submission, "Engaging with the Emergent Oder to Create Social And Financial Value." His work was chosen from among 100 submissions from 15 countries illustrating businesses in 25 different countries. The event was sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC).
Business Roundtable to Discuss Success through Social Media
The College of Business Roundtable event for January will draw attention to the early success of young professionals through the creative use of social and digital media. "Me, Inc.: The Power of a Personal Brand in the Digital Age" will emphasize how some young professionals have used social media to establish a strong professional brand that builds their reputation and makes them high-demand talent. Alumni are welcome to sign up for this event, which will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Illini Center in Chicago on Wednesday, January 27.

2010 Alumni Awards Banquet to Honor Mike Tokarz
Mike Tokarz, a 1973 graduate of the Illinois MBA and Chairman of The Tokarz Group, will be honored at the Illinois MBA's 2010 Alumni Awards Banquet. It's Official: Business Building Earns Highest Environmental Rating
The U.S. Green Building Council has awarded the Business Instructional Facility with the LEED Platinum rating, the highest possible rating offered for sustainable, environmentally friendly construction and design. This means that the University of Illinois has the first business facility at a public university to earn the Platinum level. To read a full article, click here.
Certificate Training for Aspiring Project Managers to Be Offered
Illinois Business Consulting, a registered educational provider for the Project Management Institute, is hosting a four-day project management exam boot camp from Jan. 5-8 (Tuesday - Friday). The course is designed to help participants pass the PMP exam. The deadline to register is Friday, December 11. The Roundtable Series of the College of Business at Illinois will bring in healthcare experts and leaders to discuss significant current issues affecting this industry. Students to Celebrate End of Semester with Winter Ball
The MBA Association has organized a Winter Ball for both full-time and Professional MBA students for Friday, December 4, 2009. This semi-formal event will be held at the I Hotel from 8:00-11:30 p.m. and will include hors d'oeuvres, cocktails, and dancing the night away.
Business Professor Wins International Award
Professor Madhu Viswanathan, who teaches a second-year class to MBA and master's of engineering students, will receive the India International Friendship Society's Bharat Gaurav Award, given annually to honor people whose work promotes India's heritage and contributions at home and abroad. MBA Students Finish Third at Corporate Restructuring Case Competition
Illinois MBA students Gagan Bhatia, Min Xie, and Atsushi Fukuno, along with Master's of Finance student Tirath Muchhala, recently competed in the Kellogg/ABI Corporate Restructuring Case Competition held at Northwestern University on November 5-6. The team advanced to the final round and finished third (out of 12 teams) for the second year in a row, earning a prize of $2,500. This case competition, co-sponsored by the American Bankruptcy Institute and the Kellogg School of Management, challenges groups of business students to solve a hypothetical business case of a distressed company before an audience of experts in the turnaround/crisis management/restructuring industries.
MBA Students to Attend Social Responsibility Conference
A group of MBA students will travel to Ithaca, New York, to attend the 2009 Net Impact Conference on November 13-14 at Cornell University. The title for this year's conference is "Advancing Sustainable Global Enterprise: Changemakers, Innovators, and Problem Solvers." The conference will bring together the leaders of the sustainable global enterprise movement. The Illinois MBA has a Net Impact chapter that creates opportunities for students to learn and discuss how they can make a positive difference in the world through business.
Roundtable to Address Corruption in International Business
The Colleges of Business and Law are hosting a corporate compliance roundtable on Friday, November 6, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. The title of the roundtable is "Combating Corruption When Doing Business Globally: Corporate Compliance Programs and the FCPA." Industry experts will lead this roundtable by discussing the Federal Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and ways in which U.S. companies work to comply with the law.

MBA Professor Presents Approach for Planning for Recessions
Economic recessions will happen, and businesses that plan for these recessions before they occur are likely to survive and prosper. In 2005, before anyone knew of the impending recession, Illinois professor Steve Michael and Villanova University professor John Pearce developed a four-pronged plan to help businesses navigate recessions. Michael's plan is presented in an article in a recent issue of Inside Illinois.
MBA Student Competes for Top Prize in "Solar" Competition
Joint MBA and Master's of Architecture student Joe Simon and his team finished second in the annual Solar Decathlon in Washington D.C. This event is sponsored by the Department of Energy, and challenges teams of students representing 20 universities to design, build, and operate the most attractive, effective, and energy-efficient solar-powered house. College of Business Professors Recognized in University Publication
Professors Greg Northcraft and Hayden Noel, who both teach classes for the MBA program, were recently featured in Inside Illinois for their business insights in a down economy. Professor Northcraft highlights the importance of engaging workers at all levels for making company-wide decisions. Professor Noel identifies that companies that reduce advertising to survive the recession risk sales declines that linger long after the economy rebounds.

The Center for Business and Public Policy, in conjunction with the Academy on Capitalism and Limited Government, has organized a panel of experts to speak on the topic of "Are We Regulating Capitalism out of Existence?" Experts to Speak on Changes in Investment Banking
The College of Business Development Office and the Finance Club will host a Trader Forum on Wednesday, September 23. Five alumni panelists from the world of investment finance will discuss topics including candid insights of market operations over the past year, fiscal and monetary policy affecting the marketplace, the role of investment banks, and how to find jobs in the new generation of finance. The panel will start at 6:00 p.m. in Deloitte Auditorium of the Business Instructional Facility and will be preceded by a reception in the BIF Commons at 4:30 p.m.

The Illinois MBA is excited to welcome the Class of 2011 to campus on Monday, August 17, for PreTerm. PreTerm is a week full of activities intended to familiarize students with the University of Illinois campus and its resources. PreTerm also includes various team and social activities that allow students to start building rapport with their classmates. Classes will begin on Monday, August 24.
Alumni and Students Networking at Second Tuesday Event
On the second Tuesday of every month, Illinois College of Business alumni meet together in Chicago for the Second Tuesday happy hour. The next event will be held on Tuesday, August 11, at Market Bar in downtown Chicago. Illinois MBA to be Represented at MBA Event in Chicago

DeBrock Named College of Business Dean
Lawrence DeBrock, a longtime Illinois MBA professor and administrator, has been named Dean of the College of Business. DeBrock's appointment was officially approved by the Board of Trustees at their May 21 meeting. The news release for this announcement can be found here. University Offices Closed for Memorial Day
Faculty and staff of the University of Illinois and the College of Business will enjoy a long weekend when the offices close for Memorial Day on Monday, May 25. All offices will re-open on Tuesday, May 26.
Alumni to Gather for Networking Event in Chicago
On Tuesday, June 9, Illinois MBA alumni will meet at The Gage Restaurant in downtown Chicago for the monthly networking event know as "Second Tuesdays". Appetizers will be provided for alumni by the Illinois MBA and College of Business Alumni Associations. Current students who are located in Chicago for the summer are also welcome to attend.
Graduates to Celebrate Accomplishments at Convocation 2009
Family and friends from around the world will join MBA students from the 2009 graduating classes of the full-time MBA, the Professional MBA, the Executive MBA, and the Executive MBA-Warsaw to celebrate their accomplishments as Illinois MBA graduates. Convocation will take place on Saturday, May 16, at 9:00 a.m. in the Great Hall of the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. A post-graduation brunch will be held following the ceremony in the Atrium of the Business Instructional Facility. Tickets are required for all attendees.
Women's Roundtable Event to Highlight Philanthropic Leaders
The College of Business is hosting a Women in Business Roundtable event on Wednesday, May 13, at the Illini Center in downtown Chicago. College of Business students, graduates, and their guests will have the opportunity to engage with and learn from five women who are leaders of not-for-profit organizations in Chicago.
Bernard Madoff Whistleblower to Lecture on Campus
Harry Markopolos, the accountant who blew the whistle on Bernard Madoff and his Ponzi scheme that lost investors billions of dollars, will be lecturing on the University of Illinois campus on Monday, May 4. The lecture is titled "Bernie Madoff and Beyond: A Whistleblower's Take on the SEC." The event will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be held in room 141 of Loomis Laboratory. This special event is co-sponsored by the Hillel Foundation, the Center for Professional Responsibility in Business & Society, and the College of Business.
Two MBA Students Earn Global Leadership Award

MBA Diversity Association Hosting Latin Cultural Night
The MBA Diversity Association will host MBA students, staff, and faculty for a Latin Cultural Night on Saturday, April 25. The Diversity Association brings together the various cultural groups represented in the Illinois MBA and strives to provide students with the opportunity to embrace, learn and celebrate the diversity represented in the Illinois MBA. This particular event was organized by the Latin American Business Society, a sub-committee of the Diversity Association.
MBA Service Association to Assist Local Food Pantry
The MBA Service Association (MBASA) will send volunteers to work with the Salt & Light Food/Clothing Pantry on Friday, April 24. MBASA's mission is to positively impact the community, to reinforce the importance of collaborative service, and to add value to the Illinois MBA.
Illinois MBA to Compete for Top Prize at Big Ten Case Competition
First-year MBA students Jeff Hong, Todd Koleszar, Patrick MacKay, and Parmesh Venkateswaran will represent the Illinois MBA at the Big Ten Case Competition at Ohio State University. MBA Alumnus John Murray to Talk about Chicago's Olympic Bid
John Murray, MBA 2001 and Chief Bid Officer for Chicago to host the 2016 Olympic Games, is responsible for overseeing the development and delivery of the bid's messages to local, national and international audiences. Murray is also coordinating the bid's functional teams and managing multiple stakeholder relations teams, as well as overseeing back-office operations. IMBA Runners to Support HireIllini.com at Marathon
MBA students, staff, and alumni will be running and walking in their HireIllini.com shirts during the Illinois Marathon on Saturday, April 11, 2009. They will be marketing the campus-wide campaign that promotes the hiring of University of Illinois students. Participants will also raise at least $100 for one of two community nonprofit organizations (Developmental Services Center of Champaign or Center for Women in Transition) that support employment for those with unique challenges.

Trading Insider to Discuss History and Future of Trading
George Hanley, President and Founder of Hanley Group LP and Principal and Founder of Infinium Capital Management, will give a presentation about the history and future of trading on Friday, March 13, at 1:30 p.m. in the Deloitte Auditorium of the Business Instructional Facility. The Hoeft Technology & Management Program will host Dr. John J. Tracy, Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President of The Boeing Company, for the Alan M. Hallene Lecture on Thursday, March 12, at 3:00 p.m. Dr. Tracy will present on how Boeing hones its competitive edge. Students to Vie to Become Global Tycoons
After completing their MBA 503 finals, first-year students will spend all of next week competing against each other in the global strategy simulation known as Global Tycoon. Students form teams of ten through which they make decisions regarding their business in response to a changing business environment. Through this simulation, students learn how all parts of a business must work together for success.
Alumnus Selected as Special Assistant to the President

Illinois Announces Team for Big Ten Case Competition
An internal case competition was held to determine who would represent the Illinois MBA in the 2009 Big Ten MBA Case Competition. Congratulations to the winning team of Jeff Hong, Todd Koleszar, Patrick MacKay, and Parmesh Venkateswaran! They will travel to Ohio State University on April 16-18 to try to bring home the top prize in this annual competition.
Governor to Sign Sustainability Compact on Campus
Illinois Governor Pat Quinn will travel to the Business Instructional Facility on Wednesday, February 18, to sign a Sustainability Compact with members of the Board of Trustees and University administrators. The new business building has been selected as the site for this momentous occasion due to its environmentally friendly design elements that will set the trend for future campus architecture.
Illinois Students Participate in National Case Competition
First-year students Aurora Zhang and Snehal Sheth were selected to participate in the 2009 Kenan-Flagler Marketing Case Challenge at the University of North Carolina. The teams were composed of four first-year students from different schools. Sheth's team finished in second place and received a $1,000 cash prize. "Investigate Illinois" Returns in 2009
The popular admissions event, "Investigate Illinois," has been scheduled for Monday, February 16. This event is held specifically for applicants to the Illinois MBA. "Investigate Illinois" allows applicants to observe an MBA class, have lunch with students and staff, take a tour of the new business building, and sit in on presentations about Illinois Business Consulting and MBA Career Services. Illinois MBA to Host Strategy Case Competition
The Illinois MBA will host a Strategy Case Competition on January 30 and 31, 2009, on the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus. Five teams of full-time MBA students will have an opportunity to demonstrate their business acumen to a panel of corporate judges. Fifty-nine Illinois MBA students will participate in week-long study abroad courses at Freie University in Berlin, Germany, and IPADE in Mexico City, Mexico, during the week of January 12, 2009. MBA Leading Exciting IBC Project
An MBA student is leading an Illinois Business Consulting (IBC) project where team members are conducting due diligence for a startup company that was created around a novel cancer diagnostic technology developed at the University of Illinois. The project team, comprising a diverse group of students, has been able to provide a unique perspective on the issues being analyzed to provide the client with specific recommendations as the company moves forward.

Illinois MBA Team Places Third at Case Competition
A team of first-year MBA students advanced to the final round of the American Bankruptcy Institute/Kellogg School of Management Corporate Restructuring Competition and placed third. The competition provided an opportunity for students from leading business schools to solve a realistic business case of a distressed company and presented before an audience of experts in the turnaround/crisis management/restructuring industries. The team was composed of Loren Friedman, Jonathan Grubb, Travis Green, and Nitin Verma.
Veterans Society Hosts Veterans' Career Conference
Second-year MBA Chris Petersen and the Illinois MBA Veterans Society organized and hosted the first annual Veterans' Career Conference on Friday, November 7 at the Symphony Center in Chicago. The first of its kind, this event brought together 70 veterans from MBA programs across the Midwest and several top companies such as Booz Allen Hamilton, Credit Suisse, Procter & Gamble and many others. The Illinois MBA currently hosts the largest percentage of veterans within its program among all U.S. MBA programs and hopes to participate in this networking event on an annual basis.
MBA Student Published in Law Journal
First-year MBA student Loren Friedman, J.D., recently contributed an article to the "Norton Annual Survey of Bankruptcy Law." His article, "Recent Developments in the Law of Fraudulent Transfers and Recoveries," addresses the history and construction of sections 548 and 550 of the Bankruptcy Code, as well as discusses recent case law regarding the same.
Student Leading Exciting IBC Project
Through Illinois Business Consulting (IBC), a group of MBA students is conducting a feasibility study for a Fortune 50 firm that is considering opening a satellite office in the Research Park at the University of Illinois. The project involves aligning the firm's activities with skill sets available in Illinois interns. This will allow the firm to target high-value activities that could be accomplished at this satellite office in order to maximize their return on investment.
MBA Organization to Visit CME and CBOT
The MBA Graduate Finance Association will be visiting the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and Chicago Board of Trade on Friday, October 24, to learn about operations in the financial industry. They will be touring the Visitors Center, participating in mock trading activities, and meeting with the Associate Director of the CME Group Trading Knowledge Center and Product Education.

Illinois MBA Career Services Associate Director Julie Sweet visited Seattle, Wash., where she networked with alumni and visited Microsoft's world headquarters. Julie learned about potential MBA opportunities for current students thanks to the coordination efforts of alumnus Brad Jarocki '99, who set up a meeting with the MBA recruiter. In addition to visiting Microsoft, Julie hosted a happy hour for Illinois MBA alumni living in Seattle.

Alumnus Brings Cummins Inc. to Campus
Dan Remsen ('07) returned to campus on Monday, September 15, to host a Cummins Inc. information session with other representatives from his company and to meet the new class of internship candidates. Dan was instrumental in bringing Cummins to the Illinois MBA last year to facilitate internship interviews. This led to an excellent opportunity for Kabid Choudhury, second-year MBA, who spent the summer in strategic marketing at Cummins.

During the summer break, MBA students Amitanshu Tripathy, Yifan Wang, and Young Soon Ji participated in the inaugural "innovateCHINA Global Innovation Challenge 2008". They developed a business proposal for establishing a company that addresses urban poverty in China. Their team won the "Global Links Initiative" prize for their excellent submission. International Students Complete PEP
Twenty-three incoming MBA students concluded the Preparatory English Program (PEP) Wednesday, August 13. PEP is an intensive language program designed to help MBA students adapt to life and school in the United States. The PEP curriculum includes language courses as well as lectures from MBA professors and a case competition.

Illinois MBA Professor of Accountancy W. Brooke Elliot and Professor Kevin Jackson recently conducted a study on non-professional investors. MBAs Participate in Business Simulation
First-year MBA students are currently participating in Global Tycoon, a dynamic, team-based computer simulation that challenges students to make many difficult and complex business decisions. Team members must work effectively and efficiently to achieve the strategic business objectives they have established for each of their ten firms. Global Tycoon also provides students an opportunity to apply the course materials studied in MBA 501, 502 and 503 in a simulated business environment. Students will give final presentations on their companies' performance at the end of the project.
IMBA Students Give Back to the C-U Community
On March 8, 12 Illinois MBA students will be participating in the annual Polar Plunge to benefit the Special Olympics Illinois-Eastern Prairie. The team, organized by the IMBA Service Organization, has raised over $3,000.00 to date and will be plunging into the waters of the Lake of the Woods in Mahomet, IL. The money raised helps fund sporting events and other programs for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. "Let me win. MBAs to Participate in Big Ten MBA Case Competition
Four first-year MBA students will be competing in the Big Ten MBA Case Competition at Ohio State University April 10-12. An Internal Case Competition was held to qualify a team for this competition that Illinois participates in every year. Teams analyze a complex business case by identifying the company's challenge and presenting their recommendations to a panel of industry and academic experts. The top three teams are invited to participate in the Pac 10/Big10 "Rose Bowl" Challenge in 2009.

Illinois MBA Participating in "Race & Case" Competition
Six Illinois MBA students are traveling to Vail, Colorado, this weekend to participate in the Daniels School of Business (University of Denver) annual Race & Case competition. Although the "case" competition focuses on ethical dilemmas that are encountered in today's business world, the unique "race" competition pits the schools against each other in a skiing competition at the Black Forest NASTAR race course. MBA Students Prepare to Study Abroad
Forty-one full-time students will be traveling abroad this coming January as part of the Illinois MBA's study abroad trips. One group will be traveling to Warsaw, Poland, and attend classes at the University of Warsaw. The other group will venture to Mexico City and attend classes at IPADE Business School. Students will have the additional opportunity of visiting local companies, not to mention taking sightseeing tours around these great international cities.
First-years Finish Semester with Presentations
While second-year students are completing their final exams and starting their winter break, first-year students are preparing their group presentations to complete their first semester. The presentations, which will be given on Wednesday, December 12, are part of Applied Business Perspectives (ABP), which challenges students to use their knowledge from the previous semester's classes to analyze a business case.

Finals Week Approaching for MBA1s
The fall semester is quickly coming to a close for all MBA students, but first-year MBAs will be taking finals this coming week, December 3-6, for MBA 502. The following week, second-year MBAs will be taking their finals while the first-years engage in Applied Business Perspectives (ABP), an intense, weeklong case study that challenges students to apply their first-semester education to real business problems.

Platform speeches for the new MBAA board candidates were held November 5, 2007. Elections will take place online November 12-14 with the winners being announced Thursday, November 15. The MBA Assocation is responsible for overseeing club activities, starting new initiatives, maintaining alumni relations, and improving general student life.
Students to Take Break from Studies
Students will be on Fall Break November 19 through 23. This is a good opportunity for students to rest before finals, travel, and spend time with family. Classes will resume Monday, November 26.

Admissions representatives and Illinois MBA alumni will be attending MBA fairs around the world during the month of November. The first international event will be at the World MBA fair in Tokyo, Japan, on November 2, with the final international event being held in Bangalore, India.

A group of Illinois MBA students will travel to College Park, Maryland, to attend the 2007 National Association of Women MBAs (NAWMBA) Conference on November 2-3. This event will bring together thousands of women MBA students for a series of panel discussions, workshops, and keynote speakers. The event is also a great opportunity for women MBA students to meet with recruiters, possibly leading to internship and job interviews.

Information Session on Joint Degree Programs Scheduled
In cooperation with various University of Illinois academic departments, the Illinois MBA will be holding an information session on joint degree programs on Tuesday, October 23, from 4:00-5:00 p.m. in 243 Wohlers Hall. By attending this session, you can find out how joint master's degrees can expand your career prospects as well as learn about the process of applying as a joint degree student. Kaplan Test Prep to Offer Free Practice GMAT
Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions of Champaign will be offering a free practice GMAT examination on Saturday, October 20. This is the perfect opportunity to learn how the GMAT is administered and to experience real test questions in a timed environment. Additionally, a representative from the Illinois MBA will be present at the conclusion of the event to answer any questions you may have about the program or the admissions process. MBA Service Association Organizing Adopt-A-Highway Cleanup
The MBA Service Association (MBASA) has scheduled an Adopt-A-Highway cleanup for Saturday, October 13. MBA students will gather to clean up litter from an assigned stretch of highway. The Illinois Adopt-A-Highway program, which was started in 1995, allows volunteer groups to adopt a two-mile stretch of highway for which they are responsible for cleaning at least four times per year.
Information Session to Be Held for Study Abroad Trips
This winter break, MBA students will have the opportunity to attend one of two study abroad trips--Warsaw, Poland, or Mexico City, Mexico. An information session will be held Wednesday, October 3, so that students can get the details on these events and how to sign up. The information session will be held in 241 Wohlers from 12:30-1:00 p.m.
MBA Students to Attend NSHMBA Conference
The National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA) will hold their "18th Annual Conference and Career Expo" in Houston, Texas, from October 4-6. A group of Illinois MBA students will attend the conference along with thousands of other MBA students from around the country. MBA Service Association to Hold Charity Tailgate
The MBA Service Association (MBASA) of the Illinois MBA has organized a charity tailgate for Saturday, September 29, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. This tailgate will be held before, during, and after the Illinois vs. Penn State football game. All proceeds from the tailgate will go to benefit the Champaign County Christian Health Center, which offers free health care service to the uninsured of Champaign County. MBAs of Color to Host Speaker from Sports Marketing World
On Friday, September 28, Illinois MBA alumnus Deryk Gilmore will be presenting to a group of MBA students about his career as a recruiting coordinator for NCAA athletic teams, sports marketer, and now in his work in football operations for Priority Sports. Gilmore has an MBA and Master's in Sports Marketing, both from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The leadership team of the MBAs of Color (MBAC) arranged to have Gilmore come to campus for this special event.
Admissions Representative to Attend MBA Fair for Women
Director of Admissions Jackie Wilson will be representing the Illinois MBA at the Forte Forum in Chicago on Wednesday, September 19. The Forte Foundation is a community of women dedicated to sharing ideas about the workplace, professional development, and work/life balance. Students and Dean to Attend National Black MBA Conference
A group of Illinois MBA students will be attending the "29th Annual Conference & Exposition," which is organized by the National Black MBA Association. Associate Dean Mary Miller will be joining the students at this event, which will be held in Orlando, Florida, from Tuesday, September 11, to Sunday, September 16. Students Get Break from Class on Labor Day
No university classes will be held on Monday, September 3, for Labor Day. With most students having no class on Fridays, this is a great opportunity for students to get away from campus to go sightseeing, shopping, or spend extra time with family and friends. Normal class schedules will resume on September 4.
Women in Business (WiB) to Hold First Monthly Coffee Club
The first Women in Business (WiB) Coffee Club will be held Thursday, August 30, starting at 4:00 p.m. Coffee Club meetings are organized so that students have a regular opportunity to discuss issues that women encounter in the workplace and business classroom. These meetings are held at least once a month throughout the school year.

University and MBA classes have started, and now both first- and second-year students are on campus together for the first time. PreTerm Orientation to Conclude with Lake Michigan Cruise
The new class of students arrived to meet all their classmates for the first time this week for their PreTerm orientation. PreTerm will conclude on Monday, August 20, with a career-building event, including a mock career fair with alumni and corporate recruiters and a workshop led by the day's keynote speaker, Catherine Kaputa, award-winning author of the book U R a Brand. The final event, a sunset cruise on Lake Michigan, will bring students, faculty, staff, and alumni together to enjoy each other's company while having a perfect view of the Chicago skyline at sunset.

Class of 2009 to Be Welcomed on August 15
On Wednesday, August 15, the Illinois MBA community will proudly welcome members of the Class of 2009 to their new lives as MBA students at the University of Illinois. PreTerm allows incoming students the opportunity to become acquainted with university resources and the campus, to engage their classmates in team-building activities, and to register for classes, among other important activities. The orientation will conclude with a career-building event in Chicago followed by a sunset cruise on Lake Michigan.
International Students Welcomed to Campus
Thirty-two international students arrived on campus to begin the Preparatory English Program (PEP) on Friday, July 20. This English program is held each year to help international students further develop their English abilities, to adapt to life in a new country, and to learn to write documents for business purposes, etc. The program will come to a close on August 13 with students giving case competition presentations.
GMAT Preparatory Session to Be Held July 24
Kaplan Testing Service will be offering a free GMAT preparatory session on Tuesday, July 24, starting at 6:30 p.m. If you are planning to apply to an MBA program and will be taking the GMAT, you will not want to miss this opportunity to get free test-taking advice from a trained GMAT instructor. During commencement last month, Michael Tokarz, chairman of MVC Capital, and a 1973 graduate of the Illinois MBA, encouraged the graduating students to "adapt and thrive" in the ever-changing business environment in order to find long-term success. J. Bryant Evans (Class of '00), a portfolio manager at Cozad Asset Management, has recently been quoted as an industry expert in two major publications. He is quoted in BusinessWeek Online on June 11 in an article about the effects of rising interest rates on company stocks. He is also quoted in The Washington Times on June 8 in an article about the recent stock market decline.

The Illinois MBA Alumni Association hosts a happy hour in Chicago on the second tuesday of every month where alumni can socialize and network with each other. MBA Students Leave for Summer Vacation
The University of Illinois has ended its spring semester, and most MBA students have left campus either to start their new jobs or internships or to return home for the next several months. Many new international students will come to campus on July 20 for the Preparatory English Program (PEP), and they will be joined by the rest of their classmates on August 15 for PreTerm 2007. The summer session officially ends on August 22, when classes start up again.
Graduating Students to Bring Families to Annual Tent Party
The IMBA Class of 2007 will have their final social event prior to convocation at the annual Tent Party, which will be held Friday, May 11, the day before graduation, on the South Quad of the Urbana campus. The Tent Party is a catered event where graduating students bring their families together to celebrate their achievement over dinner and music.

Class of 2007 to Reminisce at Finale 2007
Each year, soon-to-be graduates of the Illinois MBA join together as a class to celebrate two years in the Illinois MBA. After enjoying a nice meal, those in attendance are entertained by various skits, presentations, and mock awards, providing a humorous, and oftentimes bittersweet, review of the MBA experience. This year's event will be held in the Illini Union on Thursday, April 26, starting at 6:00 p.m. with an after-party being held at Joe's Brewery. Casual attire is appropriate for those attending the event.
Spring Picnic Promises Good Food and Sunshine
The Latin American Business Society (LABS), Women in Business (WiB) society, and the Partner's Club have organized a picnic for MBA students and their friends and family for Saturday, April 21. With a positive weekend weather forecast, it looks like it will be a sunny day for the MBA community to enjoy each other's company with plenty of good food as well as a volleyball tournament.
Illinois MBA Students Compete for Big Ten Title
First-year MBA students Mike Lewis, Maura Gill, Michelle Bernardi, and Chris Mulliken will compete for the Big Ten Case Competition title this weekend. This is the 15th anniversary of the Big Ten Case Competition, which is being held at Ohio State University on April 12-14. This team hopes to build on last year's team's success, as they advanced to the three-team final, finishing second overall.
International Business Course Added to MBA Curriculum
In a new MBA class taught by Professor Xiaowei Rose Luo, MBA students are examining the challenges and opportunities businesses encounter when expanding into emerging economies. Spring Gala 2007 Returns to Champaign Country Club
Students, faculty, and staff will enjoy an evening of hors d'oeuvres, drinks, and dancing at the 2007 Spring Gala on Friday, April 6. The annual event will be held at the Champaign Country Club again this year, as it proved to be an excellent venue for last year's Gala.
CareerQuest Offers On-Site Interview Experience
The CareerQuest event for this spring, which offers students a mock interview with alumni, will be held in Chicago on Friday, March 30. This year, approximately 40 students will travel to various businesses throughout Chicago and have their mock interviews on site, providing a more authentic interview experience. Later that day, students will gather with alumni for a happy hour at Grotto on State.
Deans to Hold an Open Forum
Each semester, Dean Avijit Ghosh and Associate Dean Mary Miller hold an open forum where current MBA students can come ask their questions and express their concerns or insights regarding the MBA program. University of Illinois Lets Out for Spring Break
Starting Friday, March 16, MBA students went their separate ways--some to see family, others to go on a well-deserved vacation--as the University of Illinois let out all its students for Spring Break. The break will continue until Monday, March 26, when classes resume for the final stretch of the 2006-2007 school year.
MBAs Plunge for Special Olympics
The MBA Service Association wants to thank everyone who donated money and made the Special Olympics Polar Plunge a successful event. MBAs to Square Off against Law Students in Trivia Night
Illinois MBA students will test their intellectual might against Law students in the Battle of the Brains event being held Monday, March 12. Various teams representing each program will compete in the trivia game format at Guido's starting at 8:00 p.m.
MBAs to Learn Latin Dancing during International Week
On Wednesday, March 14, the Latin American Business Society (LABS) will be holding Salsa Night at Soma in Champaign. Starting at 8:45 p.m., instructors will teach the fundamentals of Salsa, Bachata, and the Merengue. Judging by last year's event, Salsa Night will not only be one of the most memorable events of International Week but also for the entire year.
Convocation Ceremony to Be Held on May 12

Food Night Will Cap off International Week
Each year, the International Business Society organizes an international food night as the highlight of international week. Students and their family and friends get the opportunity to sample the cuisine of the various countries represented in the Illinois MBA. This year's event will start at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 11, at Wesley Church in Urbana.
Students to Challenge Each Other in Business Simulation
From March 5 to March 9, first-year MBA students will test each other's business knowledge and negotiation skills when they compete against each other in Global Tycoon. Each year, students conclude their MBA 503 course by working in teams, attempting to outdo their classmates in this weeklong business simulation activity. Teams are faced by new challenges each day and must come up with solutions that will drive their company's stock upwards.
OTMA Hosting Strategy Game Night
The Operations and Technology Management Association (OTMA) has scheduled a strategy game night and Illinois MBA quiz for Thursday night, February 22. The game night, which will be held on campus in 370 Wohlers, is an enjoyable way for MBA students to compete against each other in games that require strategic thinking.
MBA Students Inducted into Business Honor Society
Twenty students of the Illinois MBA were recently inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma, the honor society for business students. Long-time Beta Gamma Sigma member and University of Illinois professor Steve Michael spoke to the inductees, encouraging them to maintain their humility, discipline, and curiosity. Women in Business Coffee Club to Meet on February 20
Following up their annual conference, the Women in Business Society will meet for coffee on Tuesday, February 20. This monthly meeting is organized to provide a relaxed setting for students of the Illinois MBA to join together and discuss issues that women face in the professional world today.
LABS Spreading Culture through Movie Night
On Sunday, February 11, the Latin American Business Society (LABS) will hold a movie night. All MBA students are invited to come watch the popular Mexican film Amores Perros. Each student organization of the Illinois MBA holds at least one professional event and one social event per semester with the goal of enriching both the professional and social aspects of MBA student life.
Graduate Marketing Association to Host Super Bowl Party
Each year, the Graduate Marketing Association (GMA) organizes a Super Bowl party of a different kind--the GMA Ad-Bowl. While watching the two teams striving to be crowned as Super Bowl champion, students will determine which company should be crowned as the advertising champion during this premier event of the advertising world. This year's party will be held at Rock's in Urbana-Champaign starting at 5:00 p.m.
Fourth Annual Women in Business Conference Set for February 10
The Women in Business Society (WiB) of the Illinois MBA will be holding its annual Women in Business Conference on Saturday, February 10. The theme of this year's conference is "Leading Change -- From Inspiration to Performance." The keynote speaker for the event will be Ping Fu, who is an alumna of the University of Illinois and was named by Inc. magazine as the 2005 Entrepreneur of the Year. Alumnus to Hold MBA Career Workshop
Ralph Wakerly, an Illinois MBA alumnus, entrepreneur, marketing executive, and career consultant, will conduct three interactive career workshops for MBA students on Friday, January 19. The topics of the workshops include how to choose the right career, outside-the-box job searching, and how students with minimal professional work experience can generate interviews and job offers.
Brazilian Alumni Welcome Current Students to Sao Paulo
Brazilian alumni, pictured here, joined 50 Illinois MBA students at a reception in Sao Paulo on January 8, 2007, during the one-week study course. The students learned about the Brazilian economy and visited corporate sites while enjoying the Brazilian culture and hospitality.
Welcome Back Picnic Set for January 16
Whether they traveled abroad or used the month-long break to spend time with family and friends, Illinois MBA students will have plenty to share about their adventures upon returning to campus. The Welcome Back Picnic, to be held Tuesday, January 16, will give students the perfect opportunity to catch up and to look ahead to another busy semester of classes, club activities, job searches, and social events.
MBA Students to Warm Up with Study Abroad Trips
Students have completed their fall semester studies, and many are leaving campus to spend time with family and friends. However, the learning will continue for 69 Illinois MBA students who will be heading for warmer weather in Sao Paulo, Brazil, or Mexico City, Mexico, for weeklong study trips. Each winter break, Illinois MBA students are given the opportunity to attend a for-credit study trip to a foreign country. Students attend business courses at a major university and have the opportunity to make corporate visits.
MBA Students to Compete in Case Competition at Purdue University
An Illinois MBA internal case competition was held Thursday, December 14, and the team of Kapil Rajurkar, Cody Body, Zivar Hallaji, Sumeet Mittal, and Chenjie (Judy) Ju was announced as the winning team. This group, which consists of first- and second-year students, will be representing the Illinois MBA at the Global Supply Chain Conference and Case Competition at Purdue University in February 2007.
Illinois MBA Offices Will Be Closed for Holidays
The offices of the Illinois MBA will be closed for the holidays from Monday, December 25, to Monday, January 1. The offices will reopen on January 2. We wish everyone a happy holiday season and look forward to a great year in 2007.
First-Year MBAs to Put Theory into Practice
Each year, first-year students have the opportunity to apply all their new business knowledge in a three-day activity known as Applied Business Perspectives (ABP). This year ABP will begin on Monday, December 11, and will be completed on Wednesday, December 13. Teams of students will spend the three days solving a business case, and on the final day they will make a presentation to a panel of professors who will provide constructive criticism and positive feedback regarding their presentation and conclusions.
Student Club Elections Complete
Elections for the new leadership teams for Illinois MBA student organizations concluded last week, and the winners have been announced. The Illinois MBA currently offers various leadership positions for 11 student clubs including professional clubs (Graduate Finance Association), minority and international clubs (MBAs of Color; Asian Business Society), and sports clubs (MBA Golf Association). Global Business Conference (GBC) To Be Held November 10
Four Illinois MBA student clubs have teamed up to organize the first ever Global Business Conference. The conference will take place on Friday, November 10, at the Levis Faculty Center on the Urbana-Champaign campus. Keynote speakers include Claudia Knowlton-Chike, director of global supply chain at Motorola and Manuel Favela, chief financial officer of McDonald's Latin America. Elections for New MBAA Board Being Held This Week
The polls are now open for students to vote for the new MBA Association (MBAA) board. Voting ends Thursday, November 9, and the new MBAA board will be announced later that evening. Following the MBAA officer announcements on Thursday night, students may begin to declare candidacy for leadership of student clubs.

"Business Bash" Brings Style to Tailgating
To celebrate Homecoming 2006, the College of Business held a Business Bash tailgate party between David Kinley and Wohlers Halls on Saturday, October 7, following the Illinois football game. Faculty, staff, students, and alumni were all in good spirits thanks in part to the beautiful weather, tasty kabobs and caramel apples, a live band, and Illini games for kids. Whirlpool Corporation co-sponsored the event, giving MBA students the opportunity to talk with recruiters in a casual setting.

Get Fit Illinois!, the newest Illinois MBA student club, is currently being featured in BusinessWeek and CNN.com. Initiated by Illinois MBA students Chris Mulh and T.J. Houren, the club is encouraging MBA students to exercise and eat healthy. Club leaders have planned friendly competitions each month to promote healthy lifestyles which they hope will continue beyond graduation.

The Class of 2008 will soon join together for the first time during PreTerm 2006, which runs from Wednesday, August 16, to Monday, August 21. Students representing 15 nationalities will meet during this event in anticipation of a great two years at the University of Illinois.
Sunset Cruise to Be Highlight of PreTerm 2006
A breathtaking cruise on Chicago's Lake Michigan will be the final event of PreTerm 2006. Based on overwhelming international student feedback from our focus groups, the MBA program has acquired a subscription to H-1base.com -- a leading database of U.S. companies that have sponsored internationals for positions in the U.S. H-1base.com allows international students to search by function, location, and company name to identify sponsoring employers. Company data is kept up-to-date by a team of researchers, and some entries include company contact names with phone numbers and e-mail addresses. In addition, the system contains information on H-1b visas so that you can be informed about sponsorship before you approach recruiters. The system also includes forums where your sponsorship questions can be answered by immigration experts.
2005 Winter Banquet
The MBAA hosted its annual Winter Banquet on Sunday, December 5, 2004 at 7:30 p.m. at the Champaign Country Club. This year's festivities included dinner, drinks, a performance by The Bottom Line, a jazz band, and a DJ. Students, faculty, and staff were all invited to the event.
Illinois MBA Takes First Place in EXCEL Case Competition
The Illinois MBA Program won First Place in the First Annual Kelley School of Business EXCEL Case Competition. The case competition was part of the EXCEL Conference hosted by the Black and Latin MBA Associations at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, on November 5-6, 2004 in Bloomington, IN. The winning team members are Danielle Anderson, IMBA '06; Daniel Herrera, IMBA '06; Marcos Hori, IMBA '06; and Aaron Thomas, IMBA '05. This team will represent the Illinois MBA at the upcoming Big Ten Minority Case Competition on February 25-26, 2005.

PreTerm 2004 a Success
The Illinois MBA incoming class concluded a successful PreTerm on August 19-24. Students participated in orientation sessions, team building exercises, social events, a community service project with special needs children, and computer and diversity training.
